Painting the Landscape in Oil

Painting in Pastels or Water-Soluble Oil Painting
Instructor: Joseph Sweeney

Working from still life set-ups, students will have the option to work with standard dry pastel, or water-soluble oil, a relatively new form of oil paint that allows an artist to paint without the use of turpentine. Demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual attention will be offered each class session.

Portrait Painting in Oil

Students will explore the fascinating art of portraiture through painting from the model in a variety of long and short poses. We will study different techniques such as alla prima, glazing, and full and limited palette color harmonies. We will also focus on the anatomy of the head and basic facial proportions, seeing values and controlling edges. Drawing experience recommended. Some previous experience with oils useful. Drawing: Starting Up and Moving Along

Develop your understanding of the concepts and pleasures of the discipline of drawing, the foundation of all creative endeavors. We will use still life (simple and complex) as subject matter. Emphasis will be placed on all the important aspects of drawing to heighten the student's awareness and sensitivity. All levels welcome.

Painting Over the Line

Advance beyond confined lines and hard edges to a more liberated way of painting. Paint from observation and imagination to find your own visual language.Work intuitively and view unforeseen occur-rences as opportunities to discover new possibilities. Explore new processes in brushworks and color layering, Post-Impressionist, Abstract, and Abstract Expressionist styles. Examples from contemporary and modern art will serve to broaden understanding of innovative painting. Some painting experience recommended.

Direct and Spontaneous Painting

This class explores life painting through a direct and spontaneous process. Students will learn to work quickly and loosely, but very accurately, for the sake of making studies in oil that can inform larger more finished paintings. We will work on small paintings for one sitting and will explore the characteristics of the medium, process. Emphasis and discussion will be directed to the value of the "unfinished" qualities of oil studies. A great class for beginners.

Introduction to Painting in Oils

Introduction to Pastel Painting

Adult/Teen Figure Drawing

Working from both cast studies and life models, this class will emphasize the rhythm, form and structure of the human figure. Some attention will be given to introductory anatomy. Use of various mediums such as charcoal and graphite is encouraged. Beginning as well as more experienced students are welcome. High School students age 15 & up are welcome. Model fee included.
