A study of the lives of three painters whose attitudes and perceptions shaped our expectations about the content and appearance of paintings we think of as "modern".
About the Lecturer: Michael Rossman
Mr. Rossman is a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and instructor at The Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA. His works appear in The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Woodmere Art Museum as well as many private collections. He is a recipient of an National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and the Betel Award for Distinguished Teaching, University of the Arts.Session Information

His legacy was both that of rebel and martyr as well as innovator
of new methods of representation and here-to-for unanticipated
approaches to the art of painting. |

His work not only depicted scenes of his time but alarmed
his audience because he focused attention on contemporary
attitudes and behaviors. Widely acclaimed as the first
"modern" artist Manet's life and work set precedents for many
who followed. |

Session 3: Paul Cezanne
Cezanne was referred to as the "father of us all" by Picasso. In his
work, we can find the formal innovations which challenged and
shaped the work of generations of artists to follow. |
