These one or two-day programs, taught by visiting artists and Wayne Art Center faculty, allow our members and friends to study special art topics in depth.


PINCH POTTERY

This workshop is designed to dispel the notion that pinching is merely a beginner’s technique. We will explore numerous variations on the method including: creating larger forms, working intuitively, exploring asymmetrical forms, incorporating found objects, and burnishing and applying terra sigilatta.

Emphasis will be on simplifying complex elements of the landscape, as well as conveying a sense of mood and atmosphere while working in on site. Demonstrations, individual attention, and plenty of paint time.


PRIMER IN PLEIN AIR FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This two day workshop is designed to help high school students understand basic techniques of Plein Air in order to succeed through the challenges of painting outdoors. Emphasis will be on accurate design and quick execution using proper equipment and technique.

Join Carolyn for two exciting days of intense painting instruction and fun! Each day will begin with a demonstration followed by one-on-one help and critique. Emphasis will be on achieving expressive, colorful floral paintings through the use of strong composition and design. We will explore various approaches to applying paint to paper by direct painting, wet-in-wet, and glazing. Our inspiration will be a variety of roses and spring flowers. Please feel free to bring your own favorite flowers.


PIT FIRED CERAMICS

Students will participate in a hands-on pit (or sawdust) firing in which pottery will be buried in sawdust and smoldered overnight. Students will prepare their pottery for the pit-fire employing a variety of techniques that yield distinct mark-making on the finished pieces. Techniques employed will including the use of sulfates, masking, clay-wrapping, and the use of copper wire wraps. Students should bring bisque pottery. A terra sigilatta or burnished surface is desired but not necessary.


“HANDLE IT” THROWING VESSELS WITH HANDLES

This workshop will focus on wheel thrown forms that incorporate a handle. An emphasis will be placed on the mug form, while lidded jars, pitchers, and teapots will also be presented. Placement of the handle in each piece will be a consideration from the start.


INTRODUCTION TO JEWELRY MAKING

From design to completed project, experience the excitement of handcrafting a wearable work of art! In this hands-on workshop, explore the fundamental tools used by jewelers and metalsmiths and fabrication techniques including soldering, sawing, filing, simple forming, and finishing. Through demonstration and individual guidance, students will be able to create a personal jewelry piece using these basic techniques. Gain confidence and inspiration in the studio environment. Metals including brass, copper and nickel silver will be used.


MIXED-MEDIA MANIA

Join Laurie Daddona in a three day Mixed Media class exploring watercolor, acrylic, and collage. Come have fun with texturing, layering and enjoy collage with water media.


PLEIN AIR PAINTING AT THE KOI POND

This Plein Air workshop takes place in a charming flowering garden with waterfalls leading to a koi pond. We will set up on a patio with some shade, umbrellas and some chairs. Students may work in any media or drawing material. The focus will be on understanding and simplifying shapes, judging values, controlling edges and overall composition.

This three day workshop is geared toward the beginning through advanced art student who is seeking to build skills in painting outdoors. Demonstrations by Mr. Jennings will offer the student an in depth look at the artist's thought process and technical applications that are needed to become proficient in plein air painting. Open discussions of art concepts and practical applications will help the students gain the necessary fundamentals needed to develop their talents in this exciting art genre.


PORTRAIT DRAWING WORKSHOP

Develop a drawing of the human head and features through observation of planar structure, axial relationships, proportion and foreshortening. Anatomical description of bone, muscle mass and surface form will greatly enhance the process for the student of any level. The material of choice is gray or tan charcoal paper, vine or willow charcoal and limited colored chalk.


BUILD YOUR OWN TEAPOT

In this two-day workshop, students will create their own teapot based on wheel thrown parts. Various lids, handles, spouts and bodies will be presented. Bringing all these components together to create both a functional and visually successful piece will be discussed. Each student will be assisted in creating his or her own individual teapot.
