A Professor of mine once asked, “What would your art look like if no one ever saw it?” I took this as a challenge to always paint for myself.
I paint Plein Air to explore light and color.
I paint and draw from life models to study form and to hone my craft. Sometimes this will result in an interesting composition in and of itself. These painting successes are not guaranteed but lead to continued attempts.
Studio compositions are harder to explain. A good painting is an invitation to see feel and explore an artist’s experience. I am successful if I can achieve this.
