In Japan, the term Manga is a term for graphic cartoons or comics. It has become a drawing style and not just drawing comics. Our projects this week will have a woodsy theme! After looking at woodblock prints by Japanese masters Hokusai and Hiroshige, we?ll create our own prints. Using bamboo brushes, we?ll paint landscapes of mountains and forests. We will learn to make paper onto which we can stamp images of leaves. Join us!

After a survey of fantasy fiction literature, campers draw on their own limitless imaginations to create magical characters and settings based on myths, fairy tales and science fiction. Aspiring fantasy illustrators can combine an afternoon of fantasy drawing with a morning of cartooning, or multiple weeks of fantasy drawing, to create their own graphic fantasy novel.

Animals are an important part of our lives and have been represented in art throughout the ages. We will use a variety of methods to portrait our favorite animals; mosaics, paper mache, collage, painting and printmaking!Art Explorers are ready for more artistic freedom and exploration. With a new theme each week, campers may find themselves making paper or printmaking like the Japanese masters, drawing or painting mountainous landscapes, or building three-dimensional projects using clay and tile. Art Explorers combines traditional art materials with a more advanced study of the natural world, resulting in an entirely fresh approach to artistic creation.

A totally creative class touching on the many genres of cartooning, including: comic book heroes and stylistic illustration, as well as TV cartoon characters and beloved newspaper comic strips. Students will be encouraged to experiment with original ideas, or to take off on established ones. Come prepared to learn the tips & tricks that will make your comic & cartooning creations come alive! Please remember to pack a snack to enjoy during class time.

Week 12

Students bring photos of their favorite animals, or find one in class, and learn the basics of drawing using simple shapes and lines to capture structure and movement. Multiple media will be incorporated to add fur, scales and other characteristics to make student work come alive on paper.
