Congressional High School Art Competition

April 21 – May 20, 2011

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each congressional district. This year's theme is, “An Artistic Discovery.” An Artistic Discovery is open to all high school students. The over-all winner of each participating district will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nation-wide competition.

Students from 11 area schools gathered at the Wayne Art Center, Monday, April 26, for an open reception for participants in the Congressional Art Contest, sponsored by Congressman Pat Meehan of the 7th District of Pennsylvania.

More than 300 students, their parents and teachers attended the event.

Entry to the competition was open to all high school artists in the district, and the reception contained the best work from the area as decided on by a panel of judges from the art center.

There were seven first place winners in different categories, including painting, graphic arts, and photography.

Congratulations go out to GVHS senior Mike Wooten, who was awarded first place in the Self Portrait category in this prestigious competition.

Mike’s entry was a montage of selected colors of paper put together to create the portrait.  He will be attending the University of the Arts in the fall where he plans to major in Graphic Design.
