Although it may be hard to believe, the depression years, while extremely difficult for most, also produced many positive and enduring resources for our community. Founded in 1930 and chartered in 1932, the Wayne Art Center became an important element in the cultural community.  Originally organized as an art school for adults and children, today, the Wayne Art Center continues to provide state of the art education in the fine arts as well as provocative gallery exhibition programming.  This year, Wayne Art Center is proud to celebrate its 70th Anniversary by kicking-off plans for a substantial expansion.  This expansion will allow the Center to continue its mission to enrich the lives of members of the western Main Line community.

“The Wayne Art Center was originally formed in the depression years on the basic premise that in times of stress, people need ‘food for the soul’ at least as much as ‘coal in the cellar’,” once said Wheeler H. Page, past president of the Art Center.  It is that same concept of “food for the soul” that has continued to guide the Art Center throughout its past 70 years.  Wayne Art Center is a valued community resource, a unique place where creativity and life-long learning takes place.  Through its efforts to offer an artistic outlet to people of ages and abilities, the Wayne Art Center remains true to three important components of art education: artistic expression, the joy of learning and building community.

Today, with 4,000 students participating in over 400 classes and workshops annually, Wayne Art Center has developed a reputation for quality, creative programming, and an outstanding professional faculty.  In addition to offering high caliber instruction to individuals of all ages and abilities, the Center also welcomes over 10,000 members of our community to exhibitions and special programs every year.  Wayne Art Center has become a gathering place for both emerging and established artists as well as a venue for community cultural activities.

Since the opening of the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Gallery in 1994, the Wayne Art Center has played host to a wide range of exhibitions, featuring the works of an impressive list of national and international artist.

Thanks to the generous support of its members and donors from the greater Philadelphia area, the Wayne Art Center will continue to enrich our community through art.  As it celebrates its 70th Anniversary year, the Wayne Art Center is pleased to present the current exhibition: Philadelphia Sculptors 2001.
