Philagrafika: Selected Invitational Portfolio Prints, 2001-2010

December 2, 2011 – January 21, 2012

On Saturday, December 17th from 3:00-5:00pm join the Wayne Art Center as we welcome Philagrafika for an informative discussion on the presentation of the Philadelphia Art's groups' work in Master Prints from 2001-2010 now on display in the Doris. D. Vidinghoff Lobby Gallery.

Produced annually since 2001, the Philagrafika Invitational Portfolio is an ongoing record of Philadelphia's rich and innovative contemporary art scene. Each year, local artists are invited by Philagrafika to work with master printers in area print shops to produce original, limited edition prints. The program is designed to provide opportunity for local artists and greater visibility for the print shops with an emphasis is on the collaboration between the artist and the master printer. To date the program has brought substantial exposure to the artists and print shops who have participated. In addition, the portfolio program encourages artists from other disciplines to experiment with printmaking techniques. Many of the artists throughout the program's history had their first exposure to printmaking through this program and have gone on to create prints independently. The portfolios and prints are in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Free Library of Philadelphia, the New York Public Library, the Whitney Museum of American Art and numerous private collections. Philagrafika staff manages the program and organizes promotion, sales, and exhibitions.

This vibrant exhibition will be on display throughout CraftForms, 2011 and Green From the Get Go: International Contemporary Basketmakers Exhibit in the outer lobby galleries of the Wayne Art Center.

Philagrafika Mission

Philagrafika's mission is to promote and sustain printmaking as a vital and valued art form by providing artistic, programmatic and administrative leadership for large-scale, cooperative initiatives with broad public exposure. Philagrafika builds upon the Philadelphia region's rich history and abundant artistic resources to increase critical dialogue, provide benefits for the local arts community, and enhance the city's presence as an international center for printmaking. We do this through an international contemporary art festival, an annual invitational portfolio, and other special projects. Our programs have been designed to present new curatorial and critical models for printmaking-models in which the medium is presented as an integral component of current artistic practice.
